前回は「形而上学とは何か」という基本的な問いから始め、哲学・宗教・スピリチュアルとの違いを整理しました。
今回は少し視点を変えて、「なぜ今、形而上学を学ぶ必要があるのか」を考えてみたいと思います。
情報はあふれているのに、なぜ迷うのか
現代は、かつてないほど情報が豊富な時代です。
現代人が1日に受け取る情報量は、平安時代の一生分とも言われています。
何かわからないことがあればすぐに検索できます。
専門家の意見も、世界中の情報も、指一本で手に入ります。
しかし「どう生きたらいいのか」「これで本当にいいのか」という迷いは、減るどころか増えているように感じます。
情報が多すぎることで、かえって「自分の軸」がわからなくなっています。
形而上学が今必要とされる理由の一つは、まさにそれなのかもしれません。
情報を増やすのではなく、情報を読み解く「軸」をつくること。
それが形而上学の役割のように思います。
「なぜ」を問う力が失われている
もう一つ、現代の特徴として感じることがあります。
私たちは、効率的なやり方、成功するための方法、正しい手順などの「どうすればいいか（How）」を学ぶ機会は多くあります。
でも「なぜそれをするのか（Why）」「そもそも何が大切なのか（What）」を深く問う機会は、意外と少ないように思います。
形而上学はまさに、この「Why」と「What」を探求するものです。
「表面」だけを見るのではなく「なぜそれが起きているのか」「その背後にある法則や構造は何なのか」を問い続けます。この視点が育つと、世界の見え方が大きく変わっていきます。
科学と神秘学が近づいている時代
興味深いことに、現代の最先端科学は、かつて「神秘的」「オカルト」とされていた概念に近づいているように感じます。
量子力学は「観察者が現実に影響を与える」ことを示し、意識の研究は「主観的な体験」を科学的に扱おうとしています。また物理学者たちは「宇宙はなぜ存在するのか」という形而上学的な問いと向き合っています。
何千年も前から形而上学が語ってきた「意識が現実をつくる」「全ては繋がっている」という考え方は、現代科学の言葉で少しずつ語られるようになっているように思います。
これは形而上学が「正しかった」ということではなく、人間の探求がいよいよ深いところへ向かっているということではないでしょうか。
「自分を知る」ための道具として
形而上学を学ぶ理由は、人によって様々です。
宇宙の仕組みを知りたい。意識の本質を探りたい。歴史的な叡智に触れたい。そういう知的な動機を持っている方がいます。
一方で、「なんとなく今の生き方に違和感がある」「自分がどこへ向かっているのかわからない」「もっと深いところから自分を理解したい」という、もっと個人的な動機を持つ方もいらっしゃいます。
形而上学は究極的には、「自分とは何か」を知るための道具でもあります。宇宙の仕組みを学ぶことは、同時に自分自身の仕組みを学ぶことです。
知識ではなく「視点」を得るために
形而上学を学ぶ目的は、知識を増やすことではありません。
もちろん知識は増えます。でもそれ以上に大切なのは、「意識が変わる」「視点が変わる」ことです。
同じ出来事を見ても、違う角度から見られるようになります。
感情に飲み込まれることがなくなり、少し離れて観察できるようになったり、表面だけでなく、その背後にある構造が見えてくるようになります。
この「視点の変化」が、形而上学を学ぶ最大のギフトではないかと思います。

Introduction to Metaphysics Series | Part 2
Last time, we started with the basic question, "What is metaphysics?" and clarified the differences between it, philosophy, religion, and spirituality.
This time, I'd like to shift our perspective slightly and consider "why it's necessary to study metaphysics now."
With so much information available, why do we still get lost?
We live in an age of unprecedented information abundance.
It is said that the amount of information a modern person receives in a single day is equivalent to the amount received in a lifetime by someone from the Heian period.
If you have any questions, you can search for them immediately.
Expert opinions and information from around the world are all within easy reach.
However, I feel that my doubts about "how I should live" and "is this really okay?" are increasing rather than decreasing.
Having too much information can actually make it harder to find your own core values.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons why metaphysics is needed today.
The goal isn't to increase the amount of information, but to create a framework for interpreting that information .
I think that's the role of metaphysics.
The ability to ask "why" is being lost.
There's one more thing I've noticed that's characteristic of modern times.
We have many opportunities to learn "how"—efficient methods, ways to succeed, and the correct procedures.
However, I think we rarely have the opportunity to deeply consider "why we do it (Why)" and "what is truly important (What)."
Metaphysics is precisely the exploration of this "Why" and "What."
Instead of just looking at the "surface," we continuously ask "why is this happening?" and "what are the underlying laws and structures?" As this perspective develops, the way we see the world will change dramatically.
An era in which science and mysticism are converging.
Interestingly, it seems that cutting-edge modern science is approaching concepts that were once considered "mystical" or "occult."
Quantum mechanics demonstrates that "the observer influences reality," and the study of consciousness attempts to scientifically address "subjective experience." Furthermore, physicists grapple with the metaphysical question of "why the universe exists."
The idea that "consciousness creates reality" and "everything is interconnected," which metaphysics has discussed for thousands of years, seems to be gradually being expressed in the language of modern science.
This doesn't mean that metaphysics was "correct," but rather that human inquiry is heading ever deeper.
As a tool for "knowing oneself"
People have various reasons for studying metaphysics.
Some people have intellectual motivations such as wanting to understand the workings of the universe, wanting to explore the essence of consciousness, and wanting to access historical wisdom.
On the other hand, some people have more personal motivations, such as "I feel a vague sense of unease with my current way of life," "I don't know where I'm headed," or "I want to understand myself on a deeper level."
Metaphysics is ultimately a tool for understanding "what one is ." Learning about the workings of the universe is simultaneously learning about the workings of oneself.
To gain a "perspective" rather than just knowledge
The purpose of studying metaphysics is not to increase one's knowledge.
Of course, your knowledge will increase. But even more important is that your "awareness changes" and your "perspective changes."
Even when looking at the same event, you'll be able to see it from a different perspective.
You'll no longer be overwhelmed by your emotions, you'll be able to observe things from a distance, and you'll be able to see not just the surface, but the underlying structure.
I believe this "shift in perspective" is the greatest gift of studying metaphysics.
